Chapter Eleven

When Dorothy arrived at the incident room the next morning, she found all three sergeants standing in front of the board that now carried photographs of poor Ada’s body next to those of Bessie. By the look of her colleagues, she suspected that they had been working through the night. Sergeant Taylor had yawned at least twice since she’d entered the room, Sergeant Brook had a visible amount of beard growth and Sergeant Clark was adding four sugars to his tea rather than the usual three.

“Is there any news?” she asked. “What did Dr Stirk and Willerby say?”

“Willerby agreed with the inspector that the sharp rock found near the body was probably the murder weapon and that the footprint was the same as the one found near Bessie,” explained Sergeant Taylor. “The doctor wasn’t there long. He had tickets for the opera apparently. He said he’ll carry out the post-mortem this morning.”

“Has Will Cooper been released?”

“No. The inspector said while he couldn’t have killed Ada, he might still have murdered Bessie,” replied Sergeant Clark.

“The inspector still thinks we might be looking for two killers, even after Willerby confirmed the footprints matched?” she asked in surprise.

“He said he’s not ruling out the possibility,” replied Sergeant Clark.

Dorothy took a moment to study Ada’s photograph. “I wonder why she wasn’t wearing a hat or coat,” she mused.

“It was a warm evening,” replied Sergeant Taylor dismissively. “Now, I’ve been thinking. It was Ada’s statement that got Cooper arrested. Maybe that’s why she was killed. He could have an accomplice,” he continued.

“Perhaps. But it looks like we’ll be taking Horace Boulder’s picture off our wall,” said Sergeant Clark as he read a note a constable, who had just arrived in the room, handed to him. “Apparently, he ignored the inspector’s request that he stay in London and went up to Edinburgh. What with that and all his witnesses from last Wednesday, we’ll have to start looking for someone else those shears might belong to.”

“Maybe they still belonged to one of the gardeners, but the killer just came across them, like he found the stone to kill Ada,” said Taylor. “If it’s a madman like the Ripper, as the inspector seems to think, he could have acted on impulse. He saw a young woman walking alone, couldn’t control his urges and killed her with the first thing he could find.”

Dorothy frowned and shook her head. “It simply seems too much of coincidence that our two victims are connected. They knew each other and had both been employed by Mrs May.”

“That reminds me, Miss Peto,” said Sergeant Clark. “We found out where Ada telephoned from. It was the beadle’s office at the Burlington Arcade.”

“Then, if nobody objects, I think I might go there and see if I can find out who she spoke to last night.”

“And if you have no objections, Miss Peto, I shall join you. Sergeant Taylor, will you drive us?” said Inspector Derwent, who had entered the room without Dorothy noticing. He too
